Luke 10:38-42
Is there really just one thing? Martha was a busy woman and was really very hospitable but as we hear Jesus say, “Mary has chosen what is better”.
Just like many people today, Martha was so busy, or distracted as the scriptures state, that she was missing out on the many benefits of simply relaxing and sitting at the feet of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
Most of us know what it means to put in a good days work. In the days before lights a farmer rose with the sun to begin his day and came to rest as the sun took its leave. For many years the factory worker set the example of working what was known as a 40 hour week. Nowadays, people are putting in 10 -12 hour days sometimes for a whole week. Then there is the stay at home parent that is working 24/7. Last but not least is the “retired” person whose schedule is always full of things to do, people to see, and places to go.
Whatever your situation, no matter how many things are filling your calendar, there really is only one thing you really need in your schedule time with Jesus. Jesus is the one thing that belongs on your schedule every day of the year.
During the summer, our schedules are a little less cluttered but still busy. Summer is the time we try harder to take time to get out and enjoy the sun but we must remember to put on sunscreen and it needs to be SPF 30 or more or it won’t protect you from the harmful rays of the sun. Today, I want to tell you that unlike the rays of the s-u-n, spending time with the S-o-n will not harm you? Also, did you know, there is no such thing as spending too much time with the Son.
When you bask in the presence of the Son, you don’t need any protective lotion or special umbrella or a shade tree. All you need is to come to Him like Mary, sit at his feet ignore all the busyness that would take you away from Him and listen to or read His Word.
Although there are many warnings out about the damage the sun can cause there are some benefits. Without going to the extreme it has been studied and discovered that the human body really can benefit from some exposure to the sun. We gain most of our vitamin D from our time in the sun.
Listen to the benefits of Vitamin D : Reduces risk of type 2 diabetes, breast & colon cancer, experiencing a stroke. Vit. D makes stronger bones, good eye health, boosts immunity, increases metabolism, lowers blood pressure. Vit D promotes better sleep, decreases asthma symptoms, and protects against dementia and brain aging.
All of this from just spending a little time in the sun on a regular basis. If spending time in the sun can do all this just think of what spending time with the Son can do. Jesus tells Martha of the one main benefit of spending time with him….“it will not be taken away”. In other words, unlike the position you have worked to gain at your job that can be wiped away with a bad year or by a crooked CEO, the Eternal Life you received from Jesus Christ can never be taken away. Unlike your priceless collection of antiques that can be stolen, Jesus saving grace is yours forever. The benefit of spending time with the Son is an increase of Vitamin. JC: Vitamin JC is known to reduce the risk of falling into temptation; making wrong decisions; getting self-absorbed. Time with the Son fills you with the Vit. JC necessary to make you stronger in the struggles; opens your eyes to the Truth; can move you to rejoice in even the smallest of blessings. It has also been shown that Vitamin JC promotes peace within the soul; calmness to your spirit; helps us to always remember who we are, whose we are, and why we are here.
All of this from just one thing – spending a little time with the Son on a regular basis. Whether basking in the summer sun or with God’s only Son there are many benefits. What is good…no GREAT to know is that we can do both without one overshadowing the other. In fact I dare to say that this summer you may find that as you spend those few minutes in the summer sun you could pull out your Bible and read from the Son’s Holy word!
Is your schedule or personality more like Martha’s? If so, maybe you could learn from Mary, take a break from the busyness….There really is just one thing that matters most of all, just one thing that can truly give your life meaning and make it complete, – time with Jesus Christ the Son. Do this daily and maybe, just maybe, you find the answer to all your questions.
